It's an all-encompassing term covering everything from emails, social media, search engines, mobile apps to the more complex performance measuring data analytics. It also features marked differences from the traditional types of marketing we were accustomed to. The glitzy billboards, chic magazine ads, catchy jingles on radios are becoming elements of a bygone era.

My introduction to this interesting world happened in quite an unorthodox manner, courtesy of my lovely spouse Thomas Dewsbury. Thomas works in the digital marketing industry, and as the saying goes, if you can't beat them, join them. Initially, I was somewhat of a sceptic. Now, however, my previous misconceptions now seem laughable, particularly those around the impact of digital marketing on brand awareness.

Undoubtedly. That's the power of digital marketing, it's always keeping brands at the top of our minds. So, even if you're not explicitly searching for something, digital marketing subtly plants a seed, and given the right conditions, it flourishes.

Let's not beat around the bush, social media platforms are the juggernauts of digital marketing. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and the ever-popular TikTok, these platforms host billions of users worldwide. They are the new public squares, the boardwalks of today's digital age, and brands would be remiss not to capitalise on this.

From sponsored posts and stories, cryptic fun contests, collaborations with influencers, to the use of trending hashtags, digital marketing techniques on social media are as diverse as the platforms they exploit. All with a single goal in mind: get the Brand noticed!

Sometimes, social media allows for an unexpected promotion. A failed cooking experiment of Thomas became viral when our Archie decided to sample it and made the funniest face. A local brand reached out, it shared the story, and boom, both parties benefitted. An authentic human connection was formed, and the brand got free publicity. That's the magic of social media marketing!

Don't let the social media whirlwind fool you into thinking that's all there is. Digital marketing is much more than that. Two highly effective actors quietly play their parts. Enter Email Marketing and SEO.

Email marketing is like an old but reliable friend who shoots straight from the hip. It's direct, personal, and if done right, mimics a conversation that builds a relationship. Businesses sending personalised emails with offers, updates, and reminders are able to maintain and increase brand awareness amongst their consumers. Remember, a friend who stays in touch is a friend not easily forgotten.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, in contrast, is a more behind-the-scenes player, but equally pivotal. It ensures that a brand's website or blog shows up at the top of search engine results, thereby ensuring visibility and strengthening brand recognition. Believe me, you want to get on this Google's good side to keep your brand prominent!

The skilful weave of digital marketing threads creates a beautiful tapestry that firms, businesses, and brands can use to ensnare audience attention and awareness. Digital marketing is not a one-size-fits-all strategy. It involves a careful balance of various elements, which when meticulously arranged, can leave an indelible mark on target audiences and beyond.
